Day One - Guillena 23kms

I survived the first day's walk! The path out of Seville was clearly marked and quite easy to follow. I walked up to the Cathedral to where St James adorns the portico of the main door.

That's Santiago to the left of my eye!

The stroll through Seville was fine. Immeadiately over the second bridge the path splits - either through a built-up área or through a rural area. I went rural - I was sick of cars! There were a few muddy areas, but nothing too bad. I also caught a glimpse of other pilgrims ahead. I later overtook them - a couple of older Dutchmen. After a stop for coffee and to buy a bread roll with ham and cheese (oddly enough the addition of cheese doubled the price! Mind you it was a very substancial roll) I visited Italica - some Roman ruins. Italica is the birthplace of Trajan and Hadrian.
Mosaic from the House of the Birds
From there the camino dives straight through farmland. The rolling country is planted with barley and beans (I think) and the trail is extremely straight. Today was a glorious spring day - striking green fields, vibrant flowers and birds singing madly! My only problem is my watch strap broke!

The road ahead

A happy camper!

Some of the waymarks

I arrived in Guillena and was looking at the guide, trying to decide which albergue or hostel to go to, when I was accosted by a very excitable older lady. She insisted good naturedly I should go to the albergue of her friend! So I did. Well, she led me there. And I landed on my feet: I was shown to a single room! And the landlady is washing my clothes! And the place is full up now! And it turns out her husband is a watch repairer, so I can get a new band for my watch! Now all I have to do is get some dinner. I think there's Mass in town too, so I'll remember you all.
