Torremejia

I was a little apprehensive about today's walk. It's about 28km from Villafranca to Torremejia. I was worried about how my blisters would hold up. I even had a related dream! In the dream I was sinking in water, pulled down by my boots! You don't have to be Freud to interpret that!

The beginning of the track

As it turned out it was all good. My feet were a bit sore, but the blisters have mostly healed. Today's walk was incredible. We had blue skies and a trailing wind all day. The first view we had upon leaving the town was amazing - horizon to horizon of rolling lowlands as far as the eye could see. Which is where we we going it turned out. And as usual I was last out of the albergue!

The middle of the day

The camino followed the Roman road, although there was little sight of it. It's been buried under the dirt road surface we walked on. It was however incredibly straight for lengths of four or five kilometers. At one stage I could see the road crested a rise about 5 kilometers dead straight in front. And when I got up the hill it carried on for another 4 or 5!

Torremejia in the distance - and a curve!

Again it was mainly olive plantations, wheat fields and more than anything, grape vines. Some are espaliered like at home, but some were just stubs, pruned back to the trunk and no support 'fence'. I also saw young olives that were being trained along a wire frame.

The Albergue - note the white bits to the right of the door

Eventually we arrived here at the albergue. It's in an old manor house, restored and repurposed. Across the road is a church built by the same family. Apparently the town is named for this house - Torremejia- Torre of the mexica. The torre being the tower of the house (now in ruins).
The white bits - reused Roman Statues!

I'm in the bottom bunk - I have a rather stout German lady above me. And she snores - as I discovered during siesta. So tonight might be a long night - unless my ear putty is up to it!
